what we do
Since 1977...
...we have helped maintain and protect our air, land and water. Since we live in a coastal area, the chapter's main focus has always been on monitoring our natural resources. We strive to preserve all of our beautiful waterways and forests for our local citizens and those visiting from other areas to enjoy for generations to come. We are currently celebrating the 40th year of our Chapter's presence here on the Crystal Coast.
Our goal is to reach all ages as we promote the preservation of our natural resources.
Below are some of the events and community service projects
we are involved in throughout the year.

come and join us!
conservation poster contest
We have been holding the Conservation Poster contest every year since 1979. We provide the posterboard for the students in our surrounding counties and then go back and pick up the finished posters. They are judged by our committee and winners are chosen. The winners get to ride on the IWLA parade float in the Mullet Festival Parade each year in October.

adopt-a-highway roadside cleanup
Each quarter, we gather at the roadside of Hwy 58 and pick up trash and debris that are carelessly left behind by travelers. We adopted this portion of the highway near our clubhouse back in 1988 and have worked hard each year to keep it clean. Check out our Facebook page and Events calendar for upcoming Roadside Cleanup Events!

creek freaks program
Creek Freaks are kids who are making a splash to help the environment!
Each monthly session takes students outside to explore local streams and learn how healthy trees, shrubs, and grasses protect clean water and wildlife. Students are then empowered as local stream experts and are encouraged to continue advocating for and working to improve water quality.
Creek Freaks are exploring streams, shooting photos and videos, and gathering water quality data.
Did we mention BUGS??
Kids are finding bugs, and noting how many and what type, to serve as indicators of the water quality as well. Working with several federal agency partners, the Izaak Walton League has developed an array of tools for each group
to utilize to collect data. Here are some pictures of our past collections:

e-Mammal camera trapping
Our cameras have been set up at various sites in the Hofmann Forest each month and have captured wildlife, big and small, as they move about in their natural habitat. The eMammal program is a data management system and archive for camera trap research projects. This cyber-tool is designed to not only be useful to scientists, but also to anyone who wants to join in the fun and discovery of camera trapping as a citizen scientist. Camera trappers use our software to look at pictures, identify animals and upload them to the digital repository for review and archive at the Smithsonian. These data are then useful for addressing important scientific and conservation questions. The pictures provide a unique view into the secret word of wildlife.
This monthly event is a great way for youth and adults to become "citizen scientists" and retrieve data from each camera and then place the camera in a different location carefully noting the geographical coordinates. Bring a drink and a snack and sit under the pavilion and see what critter passed by the camera! For more information, visit https://emammal.si.edu/.
See some of our pictures below of critters and fellow members resetting the cameras:
